Days 11-14: Sukau Homestay, River Kinabangtan 🦜🌿🐒🦅🦇🦉🦋🦎🐊

We had a memorable stay in Sukau village with Maria and her lovely family. Her humble home was at the edge of River Kinabangtan, the second longest river in Borneo (560km). We helped out around the house by painting the mural and feeding the ducks, chickens, roosters and goats. Although they weren’t the only ones that wanted feeding as we had to rescue the chickens from a hungry lizard. I can happily say that I now have two goat friends 🐐 – Jinsung and Mira. (Call me Katie Dolittle) They were so loveable and would try to break into the kitchen at breakfast. ♥️

We were fortunate to spot lots of wildlife on the river cruises and there were countless moments of awe and wonder. The 6am cruise on the smaller lakes were enchanting with towering trees and felt like we were entering a magical realm. We also went on night cruises to search for nocturnal animals and gaze at the stars ✨.

We spotted different species of birds, proboscis monkeys, long and pig-tailed macaques, and crocodiles. It was fascinating to watch the long tailed macaques groom each other as if performing a medical examination 🔍. My favourite were the proboscis monkeys with their pointy noses and ginger hair. The alpha male looks like a grandad with a pop belly and a long nose.

Shah was an amazing guide and got us within reaching distance of the pig-tailed macaques. It was equally terrifying and fascinating to be up close! I had a scary premonition that the alpha male would tear my arm out so I hid instead 😫. I was planning my escape by jumping out of the boat which probably would have ended with being eaten by a croc. 🐊

Unfortunately we did not see the Pygmy elephants (although we did see their poo in the river- does that count?!) I used positive visualisations and tried to welcome them but they obviously didn’t get my messages. They were elusive and hidden in the palm oil plantations. We all shared the same concern about the plantations being so close to the river edge and covering miles of land. They have caused huge devastation for animal habit. Thankfully NGOs are working to conserve the forest to protect the wildlife.

Oh and I’m still walking around bare foot!

Next stop – Mabul Island 🌴🐟🐠

Lots of love,
