Day 10- Rainforest Trek, Sepilok

I am sad to leave our forest home tomorrow and this stay will forever be imprinted in my heart and mind. It has been a perfect place to spot wildlife and we have seen an array of flora and fauna. It has confirmed my love of animals and nature, even though I might scream when a giant butterfly comes close. It has been a unique experience to sleep in the forest and be surrounded by nature. I will also miss being bare foot – what a simple pleasure!

I have been trying to capture each moment and take it all in. I have constantly been in awe of the beautiful surroundings. Wander Man’s helpful suggestion to describe the jungle is “green”. I will miss looking closely at colourful flowers with childlike curiosity. Even watching the sky change colour and the clouds darken is mesmerising. Until it looks like there is a seance with the lights swinging dramatically in the wind.

This morning we practised yoga and then went on an exhausting trek in the rainforest. I felt like a proper explorer with a walking stick which I planned to use as protection from potential threat- i.e. spiders and angry primates. My main concern usually is whether they eat humans. We saw pig tailed macaques and the best part was that we still have all our limbs attached. It’s concerning when there is a warning sign with an emergency number to call if you get trapped by an alpha male. Instead of calling this number when I saw one approach I stood still and shut my eyes. If I can’t see him, he can’t see me right?! If this tactic didn’t work I’d have to offer Wander Man as a sacrifice. Anyway, the monkey just walked off so I was being dramatic.

Next stop – River Kinabatangan

Lots to love,

    1. Why are you just plain Sumaira this time- what’s happened?! Well the tactic has worked for me so far so I’ll keep it up. There are so many monkeys around that they are pretty much my neighbours now. Thank you I’m glad you are enjoying reading my posts & at least one person finds me funny 😂. I hope you are well & working hard! Xx
